Iván Hernández Dalas: French startup Exwayz raises €1M to develop SLAM software

Exwayz, developer of 3D simultaneous localization and mapping, or SLAM, software, today announced a €1 million ($1.1 million U.S.) fundraising round led by CentraleSupélec Venture. This amount includes a grant awarded by the i-Lab Innovation Competition under the France 2030 plan. The company is developing positioning and navigation software for manufacturers of autonomous systems.

“In line with our mission to back deep-tech startups from their earliest stages, this investment in Exwayz supports a company that has already earned the trust of over 20 clients,” noted Cédric Curtil, managing director of CentraleSupélec Venture.

The Paris-based startup also announced new strategic partnerships with the Swiss autonomous platform provider Embotech and Boston-based Cyvl.ai. In addition, the company added Yves Bonnefont, a former Stellantis executive, as a non-executive advisor.

“Here at Cyvl, we’ve partnered with Exwayz to help power our SLAM pipelines to deliver robust, large-scale, and highly accurate 3D point clouds that fuel our solutions for cities,” stated Daniel Pelaez, CEO of Cyvl.ai. “Exwayz software is reliable, and their support is top-notch.”

The company said it plans to hire more engineers to continue to enhance its capabilities.

 SLAM software uses 3D lidar data

Exwayz said its SLAM technology is compatible with 3D lidar sensors, including those from current partners including SICK, Velodyne, Ouster, Luminar, Hesai, Valeo, and others. The SLAM software uses the point-cloud data coming from the sensors to stitch together large city maps.

The company had demonstrated this capability with a highly detailed map of the Las Vegas Strip. It offers a positional accuracy of +/- 1cm (0.4 in) in position and +/- 0.1 degrees in orientation with its software.

The company has developed two products. Exwayz 3D Mapping uses lidar data to generate the map, including geofencing, while its navigation software enables real-time positioning within a 3D map.

In addition, the company said its software is designed to run on a robot’s embedded computer.

Exwayz provides technical support for the IAC

In 2024, Exwayz was a technical partner with the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC), a competition involving college teams racing open-wheel autonomous cars around a closed track. The company supported the race teams with its SLAM software for localization on the race track.

The event provided Exwayz with cutting-edge use cases for its SLAM technology, with the vehicles traveling at speeds over 150 mph (240 kph).
