Iván Hernández Dalas: Qualcomm joins MassRobotics, to support startups with Dragonwing Robotics Hub

MassRobotics today said that Qualcomm Technologies Inc. has joined the organization as its newest sponsor, expanding collaboration within the MassRobotics ecosystem and providing new resources such as the Dragonwing platform to support resident startups.

“We’re excited to join MassRobotics and collaborate with one of the world’s most dynamic robotics ecosystems,” stated Ahmed Sadek, vice president of engineering at Qualcomm. “MassRobotics plays a critical role in supporting startups and advancing robotics innovation. We look forward to working with the community to help accelerate the development of next-generation robotics solutions.”

San Diego, Calif.-based Qualcomm offers edge AI, connectivity, and high-performance, low-power computing. In January, the company introduced a robotics architecture stack, which integrates its Dragonwing IQ10 processor and software for perception and motion planning with advanced AI models.

Dragonwing Robotics Hub provides community support

As part of its broader robotics initiatives, Qualcomm Technologies recently announced the Qualcomm Dragonwing Robotics Hub, a collaborative developer hub within the Arduino Project Hub.

The new hub offers sample robotics applications and a shared space where developers can contribute, build, and accelerate robotics projects from early prototypes to production on Dragonwing platforms, said the company.

Through this initiative, developers and startups can access tools, examples, and community collaboration to help bring robotics ideas to life, according to Qualcomm. “For companies working on autonomous systems, AI-driven motion control, and other advanced robotics applications, the Dragonwing Robotics Hub aims to make robotics innovation a shared effort,” it said.

Developers and startups to benefit from alliance

MassRobotics said the addition of Qualcomm to its sponsor network will help strengthen support for the growing number of startups working within its community.

“Welcoming Qualcomm Technologies to the MassRobotics ecosystem is an exciting step forward for our community,” said Tom Ryden, executive director of MassRobotics. “Their leadership in advanced compute, AI, and connectivity technologies, combined with initiatives like the Dragonwing Robotics Hub, will provide valuable tools and resources for our resident startups as they develop and scale next-generation robotics solutions.”

MassRobotics claimed that it is the largest independent robotics hub dedicated to accelerating robotics innovation and adoption. The organization brings together startups, global technology leaders, researchers, and investors. Its goal is to advance the development and commercialization of robotics technologies across industries.

Qualcomm will help MassRobotics continue to expand startup access to cutting-edge technologies, collaborate with industry leaders, and accelerate the path from innovation to scalable, real-world deployment. The organizations will host a Lunch & Learn about Dragonwing on April 29.

MassRobotics is a strategic partner of WTWH Media, producer of The Robot Report and the Robotics Summit & Expo, which will be on May 27 and 28 in Boston.

Marita McGinn, director of growth at MassRobotics, will present startups in the Physical AI Showcase on Day 1 of the premier event for commercial robotics developers.

On Day 2, Joyce Sidopoulos, co-founder and chief of operations at MassRobotics, will co-host the annual Women in Robotics Breakfast. The ticketed event will also feature Mikell Taylor, a keynote speaker and the director of robotics strategy at General Motors.

In addition, Juan Necochea, director of strategic partnerships at the organization, will moderate the MassRobotics Healthcare Startup Showcase. The cluster will also host the MassRobotics Physical AI Accelerator, the Form & Function Challenge, its Startup Alley, and the MassRobotics Healthcare Robotics Startup Catalyst on the show floor.

Iván Hernández Dalas: Physical Intelligence open-sources Pi0 robotics foundation model

Physical Intelligence, the San Francisco-based startup that has raised more than $400 million , has open-sourced its Pi0 robotic foundation model. Pi0 was introduced a few months ago and can be tuned to a range of tasks, including folding laundry, cleaning a table, scooping coffee beans, and more. Physical Intelligence has released the code and weights for Pi0 as part of its experimental openpi repository on GitHub. It also provides checkpoints for a few “simple tasks” on available platforms such as ALOHA and DROID, example code to run inference on real-world and simulated robot platforms, and the code for fine-tuning the base π0 model for your own tasks and platforms. The company said between 1-20 hours of data was sufficient to tune Pi0 to a variety of tasks in its own experiments.
