GAM Enterprises this week announced it acquired certain assets of Schaeffler Ultra Precision Drives (SUPD) from Schaeffler. The transaction included intellectual property and technology to produce the PSC product. The companies did not disclose terms of the transaction.
GAM has formed a new company, GAM-Melior GmbH, to support and produce the PSC product. GAM-Melior GmbH will be based in Hameln, Germany.
“The acquired patented technology is revolutionary in that it outperforms all other servo gearboxes on the market, represents a highly differentiated solution for high-precision applications, and is a strong fit within GAM’s broader motion control strategy,” said Craig Van den Avont, GAM CEO. “GAM intends to support customers of the PSC robotic gearbox product line and build on this technology platform over time.”
GAM said the transaction strengthens its position in precision motion control. It will also expand its ability to serve global automation and robotics customers. Hartmut Hoffmann has joined GAM-Melior GmbH as Managing Director to lead the company’s operations and its continued development of the PSC product line.
GAM hopes to vertically integrate its supply chain with SUPD assets
Schaeffler acquired SUPD in 2022 when it was Melior Motion GmbH, a manufacturer of precision gearboxes for robotics and automation applications. With the acquisition, Schaeffler hoped to expand its precision gearbox portfolio and secure itself a strong position to grow in the industrial automation market.
The PSC gear reducer from SUPD is suited for precision motion control applications, GAM said. It has long been a key component for GAM, serving as the core gearing technology in the company’s flagship GPL product.
Acquiring the IP from this core supplier allows GAM to vertically integrate its supply chain and expand its manufacturing capabilities. GAM intends to support existing customers of the PSC product line and continue building on this technology platform going forward.
Founded in 1990, GAM Enterprises is a manufacturer of high-precision gear reducers, couplings, and custom motion control solutions. It builds its systems for automation, robotics, and specialized industrial OEM applications. The company is based in Mount Prospect, Ill. It serves blue-chip customers across automation, aerospace, medical, semiconductor, and other high-growth industrial markets.
